چکیده

The adsorption of Sr on the Si(001) surface with the semiantiphase dimer (2 · 2) reconstruction is studied, based upon the ab initio pseudopotential calculations. It is calculated that the semiantiphase dimer (2 · 2) reconstruction (2 dimers per unit cell) is more favorable than the (2 · 1) phase (1 dimer per unit cell) by an energy of about 0.24 eV/dimer. Considering the energetically more stable reconstruction, we have assumed four possible locations for 1/4 monolayer (ML) Sr adsorption on this surface: (i) bridge, (ii) cave, (iii) pedestal, and (iv) valley-bridge. We find that Sr adsorption on the valley-bridge site is energetically more favorable than all other cases studied here. Interestingly, one of the dimers becomes symmetric, but the other one is still asymmetric with the buckling angle reduced from 18 to 14 , when compared with the clean Si(001)-(2 · 2) surface. The calculated bond length between Sr and Si in the case of valleybridge adsorption site is 3.05 Å, and in good agreement with other theoretical calculations. We also present and compare the electronic band structures for the clean and covered surfaces as well as the corresponding charge density plots. 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Interaction between electronic structure and strain in Bi nanolines on Si ( 001 )

Heteroepitaxial strain can be a controlling factor in the lateral dimensions of 1-D nanostructures. Bi nanolines on Si(001) have an atomic structure which involves a large sub-surface reconstruction, resulting in a strong elastic coupling to the surrounding silicon. We present variable-bias STM and first principles electronic structure calculations of the Bi nanolines, which investigates this i...

Structure of Self-Assembled Mn Atom Chains on Si(001).

Mn has been found to self-assemble into atomic chains running perpendicular to the surface dimer reconstruction on Si(001). They differ from other atomic chains by a striking asymmetric appearance in filled state scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. This has prompted complicated structural models involving up to three Mn atoms per chain unit. Combining STM, atomic force microscopy, and d...

Modeling the series of ( n × 2 ) Si - rich reconstructions of β – SiC ( 001 ) : a prospective atomic wire ?

Modeling the series of (n×2) Si-rich reconstructions of β–SiC(001): a prospective atomic wire? Abstract We perform ab initio plane wave supercell density functional calculations on three candidate models of the (3×2) reconstruction of the β–SiC(001) surface. We find that the two-adlayer asymmetric-dimer model (TAADM) is unambiguously favored for all reasonable values of Si chemical potential. W...

X-ray standing wave study of the Sr/Si(001)-(2 3) surface

Sub-monolayer surface phases of Sr on Si(0 0 1) have been studied with low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray standing waves (XSW). A (3 · 1) phase was observed after depositing 0.6–0.8 ML Sr on room-temperature Si(0 0 1). Annealing at 750–800 C caused a portion of the Sr to desorb and resulted in a sharp (2 · 3) LEED pattern. Normal Si(0 0 4) and off-normal Si(0 2 2) and Si(1 1 1) XS...

Study of microstructure in SrTiO3/Si by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy

Microstructure in the SrTiO3/Si system has been studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and image simulations. SrTiO3 grows heteroepitaxially on Si with the orientation relationship given by (001)STO//(001)Si and [100]STO//[110]Si. The lattice misfit between the SrTiO3 thin films and the Si substrate is accommodated by the presence of interfacial dislocations at the Si su...
